Crime and Speed

November 4th, 2009 - Petty Thefts, Continued Speeding

November 4th, 2009

Thefts:
You may have noticed a small mention in the October Newsletter about a missing kitchen rug.
The article was cut off so I don't know who you'd return it to if you did find it?

This has actually been a far bigger problem than reported and should be communicated to all residents.

Many items have gone missing from various lots. Things like bird baths, lawn ornaments, solar lights, and now a kitchen rug. There's been some speculation that these items are being taken and sold at flea markets but it may just be senseless vadalism as well.

Everyone needs to be on the lookout for anything suspicious and be diligent in reporting what you see.

Until the BlockWatch page is updated with proper contact information for our local Block Watch members, there is a form provided to allow reports to be made which will then be forwarded to the only local contact we have and to the Langley RCMP head of BlockWatch to ensure they are being noted and dealt with.

Scouting:
If you see people riding bikes through the park and you don't recognise them, take note, take pictures, and report it.
In many areas of the lower mainland, these people are paid to scout out neighborhoods and take note of who's home and when, what's available to be stolen, etc. They may apear to be rummaging for recycleables, but in many cases any information they can resell to their handlers is far more valuable.
You'll see the bums on bikes snooping around one day and within a week, anything of value that's been left outside will vanish.
They have no problem entering homes at any time of day and cleaning your home out too. They may even arrive in several vehicles to accomplish this.
Don't think heavy objects left outside are safe either. I've seen them attempt to steal cast iron clawfoot bathtubs left covered in a backyard. If they can't carry the entire tub away the first time, they'll remove the legs and sell those first, then come back with more help to get the rest.
In many areas of Surrey, these scouts are dropped off by the van load to canvas neighborhoods for valuables and easy homes to enter, or to attempt other scams. In some cases, they'll even have homes rented for them and several will "flop" there. Don't let them get a foothold here as well!
It's better to report your suspicions even if if no crime is actually being committed at the time, than to do nothing and allow this to escalate.

Speeding Continues to be a Problem!
The park speed limits are in effect year round, not just when the weather is nice.
Early on Halloween night, Many people were still ignoring the speed limits and endangering children and residents.
It's sad that some people are so oblivious to their own actions and our rules that they couldn't even act responsibly on that one evening.
You all know who you are, you saw the camera flash when you entered on Bayou Avenue ;)

Many thanks to those Volunteers who were out manning the entrances from 6 till 8 pm and keeping it safe for kids and families.
Your presence and reminders to drive slowly really helped make Halloween this year a quiet and enjoyable evening for everyone.

If people drove that responsibly at ALL times, maybe we'd see even more neighbors and families out chatting and getting to know each other, or just enjoying a quiet walk through the park.

Don't forget, there are forms available to report speeding or dangerous driving and a we've provided a number of ways to deliver those to the park manager.
Please make use of them!
